New Year’s Day Dip At Wembury

It was a sunny morning at Wembury Beach, anticipation was high and the atmosphere buzzing, as a crowd gathers for the annual first swim of the year. Ranger Lorna Sherriff and myself agreed to do the swim in a warm cosy office a few months ago, but as we stood there on a fresh winter’s day apprehension set in! Every year a member of Wembury’s local community Terry Clarke organises a New Year’s Day dip for all of the public to join in. Year by year the news of the event gets around and participation increases, this year there looked to be over 200 people braving the chill of the sea!

Join us for a ‘Big Night Out on the Beach’

On Saturday 8th of September join the National Trust and South Devon AONB for a Big Night out on the Beach! This brand new event for us will be held at the beautiful South Milton Sands, South Milton near Kingsbridge from 4pm to 10m. Discover the nightlife of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a fun-packed evening of events. The National Trust will be leading 50 Things to do Before You're 11 3/4 activities for children, and there will be a Pirate Treasure Hunt run by the AONB. Or get in touch with your creative side and make a lantern for when the sun drops.

Last week a group of 20 Beaver Scouts spent their first ever night camping with us near Salcombe, South Devon, having been inspired by the Trust's '50 things to do before you're 11 3/4 ' campaign.  As you will see, spending a night away from home was quite an adventure - let alone being in a tent!! Come and join us at New Barton Farm near Wembury on Saturday 14 July where we are holding our popular 'From Field to Plate' event in partnership with the Moostone Meat Company. Join us for a Smokin’ Weekend

Join the South Devon rangers for two days of charcoal making on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 November in the National Trust woodlands of Wembury Woods. During this two day course participants will follow the charcoal making process from start to finish, coppicing the wood, loading the kiln and then burning, grading and bagging the charcoal. Once the kiln is lit there will also be an opportunity to try other woodland skills. (more...)

This week it’s the National Trust Walking Festival, and in fact our first ever walking festival too!! With walks organised nationwide we want to put the national spotlight on walking opportunities across our coast and countryside and raise the profile of the breadth of our work in the outdoors. In South Devon we manage some dramatic areas of coastline and so on Sunday 30th November, there will be not one, but two walks across our estate, both from 1.30pm -4.30pm. (more...)

Our Overnight Wild Camp Adventure

In August the South Devon National Trust team held a family overnight wild camping adventure in Wembury woods. This is the second consecutive year we have held this activity. Last years event was so popular and hugely enjoyed that we wanted to offer this experience to more families. The event started with each family finding a flat space to pitch their tents for their wild camp adventure.  After the efforts of erecting their tents they were rewarded with an evening meal of Jacket potatoes, cheese and beans cooked on the open fire. The hot food went down well and everyone commented on how delicious...
